The mission of Helms College is to help people discover and develop their God-given gifts through education and career services. Founded in 2007 as a private, nonprofit institution, Helms College was designed to meet the growing need for meaningful skills training and education by offering a hand up, not a handout. Through our diploma and associate degree programs, we serve a diverse student population, preparing them for high-demand careers in a hands-on learning environment. We pair with local businesses and industry partners to build enriching student experiences and ensure our program outcomes are meeting the needs of today’s job market.

Helms College is a nationally accredited, post-secondary school operated by Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) that offers associate degrees and diplomas in healthcare, industrial trades, baking and pastry, and culinary and hospitality. Named for Dr. Edgar J. Helms, founder of Goodwill Industries, we have campuses in Macon and Augusta, Georgia, and are one of the top vocational colleges in the state.
What programs are offered at Helms College?
Helms College offers diploma and associate degrees to prepare students for exciting careers in culinary and hospitality, baking and pastry, industrial trades, and healthcare. They include:

What kind of learning experience can I expect at Helms College?
We highly value immersive, experiential, and hands-on learning with all of our programs.
How do I qualify to attend Helms College?
Our application process is simple and straightforward. You must have either a high school diploma or an accredited GED or home school program; pass the Wonderlic SLE entrance exam; and complete our admissions application. From there, our team will help walk you through enrollment, including financial aid counseling and orientation.
How often do classes start?
Helms College runs on a quarter system, with classes starting every January, April, July, and October. As a student, you will progress through your program in a cohort group so that you will be able to build connections and grow together.
What is Helms College’s stance on transfer credits?
If you have previous education or work experience that you would like to have assessed for transfer credit into any of our associate degree programs, you can supply an official transcript for Helms College to consider.
If you have credits earned through our Culinary Arts Diploma program, or an approved Goodwill Career Education Program, those can be assessed and may be applied toward your program.
- Note: Culinary Arts students who have a ServSave license can also have this assessed for credit.
What kinds of support services does Helms College offer?
To start, you will meet with an admissions representative to answer all of your questions about the programs Helms College offers. Then, Helms College requires financial aid counseling as part of our enrollment process so that you are armed with a clear financial plan to pay for your education. Our Office of Financial Aid assists students with applying for federal financial aid, scholarships, and grants. GI Bill® funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs also is available for those who qualify.
As a student at Helms College, you will quickly see how we invest in resources that support our students while in school, and graduates in their career search and job placement. We have a career counselor on staff at each location, plus you have access to Goodwill Job Connection to help explore career options, as well as offering our students access to Job Connection — a resource center that links jobseekers with employers. We also have Goodwill staff on-site to assist students in connecting them to the most valuable resources such as tutoring, community services, job fairs, student events, volunteer opportunities, and much more.
